Endless Days 04:38
Endless Days [Watts] June came with liberation Endless ways rules could be bent Every day a new sensation Trouble was collaboration Those endless days were heaven sent We were made for exploration Pedaling to the edge of town Freedom was to be tasted Tender age to be hastened Those endless days Safe and sound Awoken by stormy nights Wind and lightning Thunder and rain Crisp and cool And Easy to sleep Tomorrow we'd do it all over again Those endless days When our lives were ahead Those endless days And it was splendid Those endless days Like time suspended July began when you saw her To the public pool you were led Giving her the flower you brought her Kissing underwater Those endless days with Winifred August the days seemed shorter Friendship seemed harder to find Tempers a hair trigger Fights were getting bigger Those endless days Seemed so unkind Woken by stormy nights Wind and lightning Thunder and rain Crisp and cool And Easy to sleep Tomorrow we'd do it all over again Those endless days When our lives were ahead Those endless days When we pretended Those endless days And then they ended

Dice 04:20
Dice [Watts] I'm not at the top I'm not anything I dreamt I'd be by now I still want to see myself in those shiny days But I’ve lost the trail and I’ve lost the pace I make do in doubt But I search and find and learn to be within I strive to find myself in this thickening maze But I deny the end and I fake the grace I’m living a lie Believed my hopes were always in sight Thought I might fly Guess I’ll roll the dice on the afterlife Where’d all the time go? Only yesterday my path lay out ahead I can still recall all those forgotten plans Before I went astray and they dodged my grasp Days ticked and numbered by Closing in on the end seems to be at its start Life took its pound and laid out it demands Before I saw the path and came in last I’m living a lie Believed my hopes were always in sight Thought I might fly Guess I’ll roll the dice on the afterlife

Letter to Another Me [Watts] Dear old friend My enemy Who dreamed the same things As me I see you met the girl And walked the aisle Found the one Who makes the moments Worthwhile And tonight I am alone As I was meant to be For me those dreams are still dreams Regrettably You did everything right Lost the anger that I kept Looked ahead Where I couldn’t foresee So I write this letter To another me Had some kids Like you times three They all share your smile Devilishly I see you found it all And just play pretend And get up early on the weekend And tonight I’m am alone As I was meant to be For me those dreams are still dreams Regrettably You did everything right Left the race to other rats Still got ahead In life’s simplicity So I write this letter To another me Promise me you’ll always be upstanding Promise me you’ll never screw it up Promise me you’ll never take for granted Every day you spend in all that love ‘Cause tonight I am alone As I was meant to be For me those dreams are still dreams Regrettably You did everything right Lost the anger that I kept Looked ahead Where I couldn’t foresee So I write this letter To another me

Everyone Worth Knowing [Watts] Everything I know That I’ll leave forever To everyone I know I’ll say goodbye forever I’ll leave some photographs And some happy thoughts But everyone worth knowing Everyone worth knowing goes To the light in time It comes around When the light arrives Will you be unbound? Where do we go? Do we find something splendid? Will we find the glow? Or find it all just ended Eyes on a static point Mind to a sudden stop When everyone worth knowing Everyone worth knowing goes To the light in time It comes around When the light arrives Will you be unbound? Will you get to the heart of it all in going? Will you find everything you lost in going? Will you meet everyone you passed in going? Or will you just be going away? Everyone worth knowing is going To the light in time And I am so sad to say That I’ll be going And you’ll be going We’ll all be going Away

Look What I Made [Watts] They said get it together, man But did they understand When they tasked you to act your age Twenty-five is hard enough You’re still on the cusp Of cutting your own way But time flies speedily You start a family Save up for the holidays But then two decades on When you’re still going strong Then You stand back Taking stock How you’ve rocked You’ve got it all Now You look back At the crap What you’ve cracked And you think to yourself Everybody look Look at what I made I’ve got it all Just think about how great I know you see And I sure know your hate Cause everybody wants Wants what I made They said the future lay ahead But did they feel the dread When they pushed you on that path You can only kiss your youth goodbye In a suit an tie Before you do the math And you change inescapably Pulled down by gravity And struggle to fully grasp When two decades on The picture’s fully drawn Then You stand back Taking stock How you’ve rocked You’ve got it all Now You look back At the crap What you’ve cracked And you think to yourself Everybody look Look at what I made I’ve got it all Just think about how great I know you see And I sure know your hate Cause everybody wants Wants what I made We all know We wish for all These things That aren’t For free Or is it best To wish for less Since there’s no Guarantee You get bogged down And spun around And you’re no more Happy But I got it all It feels so good And wouldn’t you Agree It’s what you want It’s what you want It’s what you want It’s what you want It’s what you want It’s what you want Not what you got Not what you got Not what you got So everybody look Look at what I made I’ve got it all Just think about how great I know you see And I sure know your hate Cause everybody wants Wants what I made

Life’s Alright [Watts] I sit and think about it all the time About how there’s no reason and there’s no rhyme About the time I find myself alive Is there someone looking out Is there someone looking out Is there someone looking out There’s always so much weighing on my mind About where I’ll look and what I’ll find About the land I find myself assigned Is there someone looking out Is there someone looking out Is there someone looking out And it’s always so easy To find myself lost Life’s just like that The good gets washed But if I take a step back See everything in full It always gets easier The push and the pull Because I wasn’t born in the middle age I didn’t toil in a cave I was never asked to pick up arms and fight So all in all I guess that life’s alright There’s not a moment I’m not back in school Studying all the rulers and the ruled And the class with which I’ve been pooled Is there someone looking out Is there someone looking out Is there someone looking out I don’t excuse those who are cruel And those who make riches only fuel And I’m not one who has been fooled Is there someone looking out Is there someone looking out Is there someone looking out And it’s always so easy To find myself lost Life’s just like that The good gets washed But if I take a step back Consider everything in full It always gets easier The push and the pull Because I didn’t grow up in a time of war I’ve never been truly poor Or faced with famine or biblical blight So all in all I guess that life’s alright

Goodbye 04:49
Goodbye [Watts] I slowed In the wake of your glow By all the dull lights Of the morning Now I see Your shade descending on me And I know It’s just a warning There’s a new countdown Will I wear the crown? Or will I lose my head Again No it’s nothing new Between me and you Should I just play dead? Amen And it’s all because I picked you up and helped you fly Gave you trust and learned you lie Kept asking how but discovered why When you love someone When you love someone Sometimes the best thing to do is say goodbye I feel So trapped on your wheel But my head always spins Back to that longing But now I know There’s no defending our show And I see I’ve just been stalling It’s the same showdown Will I swim or drown? Or will I wash out Instead Yes, I still love you But it’s time you knew I’ve found a different route Ahead And, it’s all because I picked you up and helped you fly Gave you trust and learned you lie Kept asking how but discovered why When you love someone When you love someone Sometimes the best thing to do is say goodbye

Crisis 02:49
Crisis [Watts] Oh, that second hand Is starting to slap you silly And time is marching All over your pretty face You look back Trying to match a changing picture Or just recapture anything at all From your younger days Crisis Oh that new car is so shiny Crisis Oh that new wife is so hot Crisis Oh your new hair’s not monochromatic Crisis Oh you’re such a juggernaut All those wrinkles Cut into your smooth self-image And you’re moving stiffly Like those you once mocked You look ahead Only to see what’s already left you And find that time is a speeding bullet That has killed your shot Crisis Oh that new car is so shiny Crisis Oh that new wife is so hot Crisis Oh your new hair’s not monochromatic Crisis Oh you’re such a juggernaut

Make Believe 05:30
Make Believe [Watts] We were just kids Were we in love? Now time has told And we’re out for blood The house we played We thought we ought To feel grown up So we tied the knot It was make believe And we made believe Through all the grief Now it’s released I loved her smile And I loved her soul I loved her wit Thought I loved her whole I loved her mind And that she made me stir But I wonder if I ever really loved her Right from the start Tension squeezed tight Too much to bear Things weren’t right Our eyes didn’t see From the other side Was about winning Not letting things slide And we just make believe And we were free to deceive Then we came to agree It had all been make believe She loved my eyes And that I looked right She loved my strength That I was ready to fight She loved my heart And that I’d disagree But I don’t think She ever really loved me

Yes, You 06:44
Yes, You [Watts] Every day Random time Carefree thought When I seem to get okay I still wish I was with you After "Hi" Random spark First smile After every late night talk I still dream we could make it too To think I won’t always know you To think we won’t ever see it through Every bargain Every hole Every break Every time I'm sure I know It was always meant to be you Yes, You All the time In my head Careless thought When I think I hear your voice You say it's better to forget you After fling Random touch First lies After all the late night guilt I still wish I could dream with you To think you've gone and just moved on To think there's now somebody new Getting low Getting numb Getting halved Getting too lost to go back It’s what you’ve left behind you Yes, You There’s nothing ‘round here Not anything There’s nothing ‘round here But everything 'Cause there’s nothing ‘round here Not anything There’s nothing ‘round here But everything There’s nothing ‘round here But what you see There’s nothing ‘round here ‘Round here ‘Cause there’s nothing ‘round here Not anything There’s nothing ‘round here But everything There’s nothing ‘round here But what you see There’s nothing ‘round here ‘Round here

about

"Middle Ages" is the culmination of a multiyear remote collaboration for long time friends and songwriters Kevin Heckeler and Scott Watts. Originally (and until recently) making music under a different project name, Kevin and Scott decided on a new band name for this latest album (something that better reflects the curious and contemplative nature of the music).

Their prior alternative rock concept album "Missing Pieces" was favorably received. After a break they reconvened to making music in 2020 like so many others at the time. Initially it was just random song ideas but eventually Scott found common themes and started molding them into a cohesive narrative ('Middle Age'). Weekly songwriting sessions for a couple years allowed Scott to be heavily involved in the note by note composition of the songs, bringing fresh and unique ideas to life that otherwise may never have been achievable without advancements in technology, and specifically remote collaboration.
